This blog should have some music that appeals to everyone, right? So this isn’t really my thing, but I think The Volture is good in their goth rock way, and they’re playing soon at The Imperial (Friday, July 27th, 10pm, 100p, don’t forget your ID), and my friend is promoting them.

A lot of talk about electoral fraud today, with many many photos of the official ballot tallies compared to what the IFE (elections institute) registered on their site. It looks like ballot collectors used their smart phones to take photos before turning the ballots in. Very interesting.

Jpegs against Televisa: Mexican election social media imagery

I’ve been collecting these for the past couple of weeks. Really creative stuff. The following months will be an interesting time for social media in Mexico, we’ll see if the #YoSoy132 movement continues, which I hope it does. They did very good work organizing themselves, and now, with their common enemy in office, this is an opportunity to really create dialogue about long term issues. I’m personally looking forward to watching the differences between the US election campaigns and those in Mexico, and the Occupy Movement vs the YoSoy132 movement. Occupy fell apart in a lot of ways, and got angry to the point of incoherence, alienation, and collapse. YoSoy132 could be different. It’s a phenomenal experiment in communication that I’m ready to watch.

The President who doesn’t read, AKA the major Ñieto PR team gaffes

Remember when a reporter asked Ñieto to name his 3 influential books, and he couldn’t quite figure it out? He put out some titles and some writers, but couldn’t match them together, and managed to say the bible was one (any politician’s fallback, right?) but admitted he’d never finished it (why? Why say that?) That was a big fat PR team gaff (it was a national book fair, pretty easy to anticipate that question), as was letting the PRI party president cut in line to vote.

This image floated around then:

Here’s the video of the book fair. And here’s the New York Times article about the Ñieto fail, including the angry tweet his teenage daughter sent (PR team WHERE were you?).

Naturally, people fired up the meme machine using the classic advertising style of the large bookstore group Gandhi.

The site Know Your Meme has more on the many, many entertaining Twitter campaigns around Ñieto.

Ñieto’s marketing campaign was very impressive in old school media, but his PR slip ups were surprising and careless. When everyone has a cell phone and makes jpegs easily, his campaign (or now, Presidential team) has to be on top of accidents like this.
